Alhaji Yaya Jallow was one of the pioneering leaders of The Gambia’s opposition United Democratic Party (UDP), serving as the party’s Deputy Secretary General and Deputy Party Leader from its founding in 1996. He was among the early political figures who helped build and strengthen the UDP during some of the most difficult years of Gambian political life. Contemporary accounts confirm his election as Deputy Secretary General at the UDP’s early congress, alongside other founding-era leaders.
A dedicated party organizer and loyal deputy to H.E ANM Ousainu Darboe, Yaya Jallow played an important role in representing the UDP in national political engagements and opposition initiatives. He was known for his calm disposition, political maturity, and commitment to the party’s democratic ideals.
His political career was not without personal sacrifice. In 2000, Yaya Jallow was among several leading opposition figures arrested by the Yahya Jammeh regime and accused of involvement in the deaths of supporters of the ruling party. The charges were ultimately not proven, and the case against him and the other opposition leaders did not result in convictions.
Yaya was also an important voice in the broader struggle for opposition unity. During the discussions surrounding the National Alliance for Democracy and Development (NADD), he represented the UDP in important negotiations and engagements. His participation reflected the UDP’s longstanding commitment to finding common ground among opposition parties in the pursuit of democratic change.
After many years of service to the UDP, Yaya eventually left the party in 2011. He later continued serving his country in other capacities, including diplomatic and public-service roles. His career remained rooted in a commitment to national service and the advancement of Gambian interests.
Alhaji Yaya Jallow passed away in Dakar, Senegal, on February 23, 2020. His death marked the passing of one of the early leaders who helped lay the foundations of the UDP and participated in the party’s struggle during its formative years.
