Aja Jambanding Drammeh was one of the pioneering women of the United Democratic Party (UDP) and served as the first President of the UDP Women’s Wing. She was a trailblazer whose courage, political commitment, and grassroots activism helped establish the foundations of women’s participation within the party.
From the earliest days of the UDP, Aja Jambanding understood that women had to be at the heart of the democratic movement. She helped organize women across communities, mobilize grassroots support, and encourage Gambian women to participate actively in political life.
As the inaugural President of the UDP Women’s Wing, she helped establish a structure that would become one of the most important pillars of the party. Her leadership created a foundation upon which generations of UDP women would build, organize, campaign, and assume greater responsibilities within the party and the country.
Aja Jambanding’s political contribution was particularly significant because she was operating at a time when Gambian politics was overwhelmingly male-dominated. She demonstrated through her leadership that women were not merely supporters of political movements, they could be organizers, decision-makers, leaders, and powerful voices for democratic change.
After her passing, Aji Sukaina Kah succeeded her as President of the UDP Women’s Wing. Aji Sukaina would go on to become one of the UDP’s longest-serving and most respected women leaders, carrying forward the foundation established by Aja Jambanding and dedicating decades of her life to the party and its democratic struggle.
The succession from Aja Jambanding Drammeh to Aji Sukaina Kah represents an important chapter in the history of the UDP Women’s Wing, one generation of courageous women passing the torch to another and ensuring that women remained central to the party’s political organization.
Aja Jambanding also belonged to a generation of Gambian women who understood the importance of mentorship and political continuity. Her legacy lives not only in the structures she helped establish, but also in the women who followed her and continued the work of organizing and empowering Gambian women.
Much of this work took place away from the national spotlight, in communities, homes, meetings, women’s networks, and grassroots political gatherings. Yet it was this sustained organizing that helped give the UDP the broad grassroots foundation it needed to survive and grow.
Aja Jambanding Drammeh was one of those foundational women.
She helped open the door for generations of Gambian women to participate more fully in political life. Her pioneering leadership created a legacy that continued through Aji Sukaina Kah and the many women who followed in their footsteps.
Aja Jambanding Drammeh, thank you for your tremendous service to The Gambia and to the United Democratic Party. Thank you for being a trailblazer, a mobilizer, a leader, and the first President of the UDP Women’s Wing.
