Aji Yamundow Jaye Yabo is a veteran member and senior leader of the United Democratic Party (UDP), whose journey with the party dates back to its founding in 1996.
Over the years, she has served the UDP in several leadership capacities and has been a steadfast advocate for democracy, good governance, human rights, and the advancement of women in The Gambia’s political life. Her long-standing commitment to the party has made her an important figure in the UDP’s three-decade history.
In 2016, Aji Yamundow Jaye Yabo was elected as the first female Deputy National President of the UDP, a significant milestone in the party’s history and in the broader participation of Gambian women in political leadership. At the time, she was also a leading voice in the party’s efforts to challenge authoritarian rule and advance democratic change.
She continued to serve in the party’s national leadership, including as First National Vice President following the UDP’s 2018 congress.
At the UDP’s 2022 congress in Janjanbureh, she was elected National President, placing her at the head of the party’s national executive and making her one of the most senior women in Gambian party politics.
As National President, Aji Yamundow Jaye Yabo has worked alongside Party Leader H.E. ANM Ousainou Darboe and the wider National Executive to guide the affairs of the UDP and strengthen the party’s organizational structures at home and in the diaspora. Her role has included representing the party at major national and international engagements, including the UDP Diaspora Congress in Spain in 2024.
Her story is one of three decades of loyalty, service, resilience, and leadership, from the founding years of the UDP to its continued struggle for democratic governance in The Gambia.
