Alhaji Amadou Corra is one of the pioneering figures in the history of The Gambia’s opposition United Democratic Party (UDP). A founding member and one of the men who participated in the historic first meeting that set the process of creating the UDP in motion, Corra belongs to the generation of Gambians who helped lay the foundations of a new democratic political movement in 1996.
Following the military takeover of 1994 and the suspension of political activities, representatives of the former People’s Progressive Party (PPP), Gambia People’s Party (GPP), and National Convention Party (NCP) began exploring the possibility of creating a united political force.
Amadou Corra was among the small group of pioneers who attended the maiden meeting held at the residence of Sidia Sagnia. The meeting was conducted in secrecy because, despite the lifting of the political ban, openly organizing against the military government remained politically sensitive and potentially dangerous. Alongside Sidia Sagnia, Landing Jallow Sanneh, Jobe Kanteh, Ansunding Keita, Bemba Tambedou, and Femi Peters, Corra helped set in motion the process that would eventually lead to the formation of the UDP.
That historic gathering was more than a meeting of politicians. It represented a determination to bring together different political traditions and create a broad-based democratic movement capable of offering Gambians an alternative to military rule.
The founding generation subsequently worked to transform that initial idea into an organized political party. The UDP was formally established in August 1996, and its emergence marked a significant moment in the return of multiparty politics to The Gambia.
Amadou Corra remained closely associated with the UDP and its history. Decades later, he continued to speak passionately about the party’s origins and the principles that inspired its creation. At a UDP victory rally, he recalled the history of the party’s formation and urged Gambians not to take the UDP for granted, describing it as a party that had “sown the seeds of democracy” in The Gambia.
His continued commitment to the party reflects the deep connection between the UDP’s founding generation and the democratic ideals that motivated them three decades ago. The men and women who gathered in those early meetings could not have known the full journey that lay ahead, the years of opposition, political repression, arrests, sacrifices, electoral defeats, renewed hope, and the eventual democratic transition of 2017.
But they knew one thing, The Gambia deserved a democratic future.
Amadou Corra was one of those who helped take the first step.
His name therefore belongs among the pioneers whose contributions are woven into the history of the United Democratic Party. Their courage transformed an idea into an organization, and that organization grew into one of the most enduring political movements in modern Gambian history.

Thank you for being among those who gathered at the beginning, when the future of the movement was still only an idea and its success was far from certain.
