Alhaji Ansunding Keita was one of the pioneering figures in the formation of The Gambia’s opposition United Democratic Party (UDP) and one of the individuals who took part in the historic first meeting that set the process of creating the party in motion.
Following the July 1994 military takeover and the subsequent suspension of political activities, Gambian politicians and activists faced an uncertain and dangerous political environment. When the ban on political activities was eventually lifted in 1996, representatives of the former People’s Progressive Party (PPP), Gambia People’s Party (GPP), and National Convention Party (NCP) began secret discussions about creating a new political movement capable of challenging authoritarian rule.
It was during this period that Ansunding Keita participated in the maiden meeting held at the residence of Sidia Sagnia, which brought together representatives of the three political traditions. The meeting, held under conditions of secrecy because of the prevailing political climate, laid the foundation for the creation of the United Democratic Party.
That first gathering was more than simply a political meeting. It was the beginning of a historic effort to unite different political traditions and build a new democratic force for The Gambia. The participants agreed on the need for a broad-based political movement that would bring Gambians together around the principles of democracy, freedom, justice, and national development.
Ansunding Keita was therefore part of the small group of courageous Gambians who took those first steps toward creating what would become one of the most enduring opposition movements in the country’s political history.
The circumstances surrounding the UDP’s birth were far from easy. The military government remained firmly in control, and openly organizing against the authorities carried considerable risks. Yet Ansunding Keita and his fellow pioneers were prepared to take those risks because they believed that Gambians deserved the right to participate freely in determining the future of their country.
The UDP would go on to become a powerful vehicle for democratic resistance, surviving years of political repression, arrests, intimidation, restrictions, and persecution. The foundation laid by those early pioneers created a political movement that continues to play a major role in The Gambia’s democratic journey.
Ansunding Keita’s name belongs among those who were present at the beginning, among the men and women who helped turn an idea into a political organization and gave birth to a movement that has now endured for three decades.

You were among the pioneers who answered the call at a difficult moment in our nation’s history and helped lay the foundation for a new democratic political movement.
