Mbemba Tambedou is a veteran Gambian politician, former government minister, and one of the pioneering figures in the formation of the United Democratic Party (UDP).
A prominent figure in Gambian public life, Mbemba Tambedou was among the early political leaders who participated in discussions that laid the foundation for the creation of a new democratic political movement following the 1994 military takeover and the subsequent ban on political parties. He was part of the early consultations involving former members and supporters of the banned Gambia People’s Party (GPP), People’s Progressive Party (PPP), and other democratic forces that ultimately contributed to the formation of the UDP in 1996.
His political career predates the UDP. He served in public office during the First Republic and represented Tumana in the National Assembly, winning the seat in the 1992 general election as a Gambia People’s Party candidate.
Following the establishment of the UDP, Mbemba Tambedou became one of the party’s early standard-bearers in the political struggle against military rule. In the 1997 parliamentary elections, he contested the Tumana constituency for the UDP, demonstrating his continued commitment to the party’s democratic cause.
Throughout the years of authoritarian rule under former President Yahya Jammeh, Tambedou remained an important figure within the UDP and continued to contribute to the party’s political work. His long-standing involvement in Gambian politics, spanning different political eras, reflects a lifetime of public service and commitment to democratic participation.
Mbemba Tambedou has also remained engaged in the affairs of the UDP in recent years. He continues to serve within the party’s national leadership structure as a nominated member of the National Executive. (UDP)

As one of the pioneers who helped shape the political movement that became the UDP, his story is an important part of the party’s 30-year journey, from its founding in 1996, through years of political repression, to its continued pursuit of democratic governance and national renewal.
